Practicum Information

Practicums are an integral part of RMC’s dedication to hands-on, practical learning methods.  As such, practicums are included in the following RMC Programs:

The CSW certificate contains two practicums – one observation practicum, usually taking place within the first two months of the program, and one at the end.

  • HSER 1901: CSW Observation Practicum (60 hours) two-weeks
  • HSER 2901: CSW Practicum (160 hours) four-five weeks.

For more information, please contact the CSW Program Chair, Alan Millar.

The ECE Certificate contains three separate practicums:

  • ECED 1920: Practicum 1 (126 Hours) – three-weeksThis practicum provides students with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the process of relating to and working with young children in a quality early childhood setting. Students will conduct directed observations of children and educators, and will begin to integrate the theories they have learned with the practices they observe. An opportunity to reflect on and discuss their experiences will be offered during two seminar sessions.
  • ECED 1940: Practicum 2 (126 Hours) – three-weeksThis practicum will continue to provide the student with an opportunity to relate to and work with young children in a quality early childhood setting.  Students will demonstrate their developing skill in communicating, planning, and implementing ‘best practice’ as they further their observation abilities and continue to learn to contribute to a quality early childhood program.
  • ECED 2900: Practicum 3 (169 Hours) – four-weeks – This practicum provides an opportunity for students to integrate, consolidate, and apply the knowledge and skills learned during their program of study in order to demonstrate ‘best practice’ within a licensed early childhood program.

The ECE Diploma and the ECE Post-Basic Special Needs Educator contain the following practicum:

  • ECED 2950: Inclusion and Diverse Needs Practicum (201 hours) – five-weeks – This practicum provides students with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the process of relating to and working with young children in a quality early childhood setting. Students will conduct directed observations of children and educators and will begin to integrate the theories they have learned with the practices they observe. An opportunity to reflect on and discuss their experiences will be offered during three seminar sessions.

The ECE Post-Basic Infant / Toddler Educator contains the following practicum:

  • ECED 2960: Infant and Toddler Practicum (201 hours) – five-weeksThis practicum provides students with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the pro-cess of relating to and working with infant and toddlers in a quality early childhood setting. Students will conduct directed observations of children and educators and will begin to inte-grate the theories they have learned with the practices they observe. An opportunity to reflect on and discuss their experiences will be offered during three seminar sessions.

The EA Certificate contains two separate practicums:

  • Practicum 1 (2 weeks) – The initial practicum occurs early in the program, around week 7 or 8.  Students will be in school placements Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 2:30pm.  All students will spend one week in an elementary setting and one week in a secondary setting. The 10-day Observation Practicum offers an opportunity for entry into the classroom and observe EA and teacher interactions with student with diverse needs.  Specific assignments are geared to helping the student to understand the dynamics of the environment and how best to support students.
  • Practicum 2 (4 weeks) – Students will be in school placements Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 2:30pm.  In most cases students can select their preference of an elementary or secondary placement (per availability). The Final Practicum provides students with a full opportunity to engage in the role of an Education Assistant (EA) in a classroom. Students begin by shadowing an EA in their assignment.  With mentorship they, then, take over the role of providing support to the student(s), accordingly. This practicum allows students to experience the full gamut of experiences an Education Assistant may encounter in any given day.  The goal is to allow the student to apply the skills learned during their tenure in the EA program, ensuring that students with diverse needs are fully supported and enabled.

The MOA certificate contains one practicum at the end of the program:

  • ADMN 1290: MOA Practicum (200 hours) five-weeks
